Most people eat two or three meals per day with a couple of snacks in between. Yet there are still common nutritional deficiencies in the adult population despite the many calories people take in. Increasingly, people are trying to get healthy and lose weight, but they may not always realize the important role that nutrition plays while on a weight loss programme. The more people know about these issues, the more successful they can be in reaching their goals.
‘All calories are not created equal, and we know how important nutrition is to weight management and weight loss medications,’ says Dr Sean Bourke, founder and chief medical officer at JumpstartMD, a company specializing in weight loss and total health optimization. ‘We take a science-backed and customized approach to helping people. We believe that normal is not optimal, so we strive for optimal.’
According to the country’s nutrition report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some people have more nutritional deficiencies than others. They estimate that about 10 per cent of adults are deficient in vitamins B6 and D, and iron. They also found that women between the ages of 20 and 39 have iodine levels that indicate deficiency.
Many people may not realize that nutritional deficiencies can lead to weight issues. A study published in the journal Nutrients looked at diet quality and micro-nutrient intake among long-term weight loss maintainers. The authors report that many people who are overweight or obese exceed energy intake needs but do not meet vitamin and mineral requirements. Poor diet quality is linked to over-consuming high-calorie, low-nutrient-value foods.

Nutrition plays a critical role in sustainable weight loss, including when it comes to the following key factors.
Regulate blood sugar levels. It’s important to maintain healthy glucose levels. When they are elevated, fat is stored, leading to weight gain and putting people at a higher risk for health issues, such as diabetes. Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels can help people feel better, maintain weight loss, and help the body burn more fat. Stable glucose levels also help people have fewer cravings and more energy.
Support metabolic health. Getting enough protein and healthy fats is essential to maintaining muscle mass and satiety. It also helps people lose weight, boosts the immune system, improves bone health, and helps the body repair tissue. Most people have no idea how much protein they should be consuming or what good-quality sources of it are.
Reduce inflammation. Some foods people eat can increase or reduce the inflammation rate. It’s always a good goal to reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation in the body is linked with such health conditions as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, among other issues. Eating foods that help reduce inflammation is essential to overall health.
Improve gut health. Gut health, or the microbiome, is related to many health issues. A healthy gut microbiome can help people in many ways, including losing weight and being in a better mood. It’s important to eat fibre-rich foods to help aid in digestion and support a healthy microbiome, which will help with metabolism and immune function.
