When it comes to explaining the appeal of luggage and travel accessories’ brand Dagne Dover, there’s a lot to unpack. Fortunately, the founders of the decade-old New York City-based company—Jessy Dover, Melissa Mash, and Deepa Gandhi—caravanned out to Los Angeles for the summer solstice to introduce avid travellers, models, fashionistas, and other tastemakers in lifestyle journalism amd influencer realm to its Luggage Edit.
Dagne Dover’s full-sized carry-ons and suitcases, appropriately, were displayed in beachy neutrals (Warm Dust, Dark Moss, Citrine, Camel) along with other new pieces like the posh Kyoto pet carrier and smaller handbags, cellphone totes, cosmetics bags, packing cubes, and other sustainably made, 100 per cent vegan essentials for women and men on the go.
Mash, Gandhi, and Dover explained that what goes into the production of a Dagne Dover bag is as important as what the traveller packs into it. Repreve recycled material, made from recycled plastic bottles, is used for all bag linings and dust bags. Some styles like the Nova Sling Bag and Puff collection are created entirely from this durable, versatile material. Compared to virgin fibre, Repreve requires less water and energy and emits fewer greenhouse gases, according to the founders.
Other things that make this brand feel good by nature is the company’s partnership with resale company Archive to create Almost Vintage—an initiative that lets you buy and sell used Dagne Dover goods, encouraging eco-friendlier fashion and a lower carbon footprint. When there’s a higher number of returns, the bags are donated to Shelter Partnership in Los Angeles, providing luggage to those in need.
The event, staged at West Hollywood’s Wheelhouse, a home-turned-event space, had the trappings of a perfect staycation. Guests got to sample the brand in real time, receiving a beach tote and fanny pack upon entering. Once inside, there was a lovely array of picnic fare from Hungry Bear Catering, excellent card readings, and goodies allowing them to put the beach bags to good use: a custom fragrance from Camp Disco Perfume Lab, and ear piercings and earrings from Maison Miru Jewelry.
