Many Gen Xers and older millennials will fondly remember the name Armitron, known for its of-the-moment watch designs, digital styles, and affordable prices. As it entered the market and the public consciousness in 1975, there is a good chance that many who grew up in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s will remember Armitron made the first watch they owned.

As Armitron edges towards its 50th anniversary, it is fitting that it just débuted the Metro, a collection that reflects current style as well as the Gen X identity of growing up on the precipice of analogue and digital. While it looks like a certain high-tech watch from a distance, there’s a lot of “old-meets-new” to enjoy closer up. While the case and band are modern in a timeless way, the face has a traditional watch face, day-and-date calendar, and a backlit LED display.

The Metro Gold and Metro Black (US$80 each) continue the brand’s tradition of affordability, versatility, and a touch of old-school charm. The mesh stainless steel bands feature a secure fold-over buckle closure.
